Access, closures, permits & safety
Enter via Mount Buffalo Road and use the official visitor and plateau maps to select the day visitor area nearest the climbing sector. Check road closures before committing to a high-plateau approach.
Use designated day visitor parking such as The Gorge Day Visitor Area. Do not drive or park beyond seasonal road-closure gates; choose an open visitor area shown on the official park maps.
Reservoir Road closes seasonally from the Thursday after the King's Birthday long weekend through the Thursday before the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Horn Road closes from the Thursday after that long weekend through September 15.
Alpine weather can be extreme and road conditions change quickly. Carry and fit snow chains whenever entrance or road signs require them, obey warning signs, and assess climbing and abseiling risks before entering exposed granite terrain.
Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.
