Access, closures, permits & safety
Start at the Frenchmans Cap trailhead carpark 29 km west of Derwent Bridge on the Lyell Highway. The registered multi-day track leads via Lake Vera and Lake Tahune toward the cliffs.
The official walk starts and finishes at the Lyell Highway trailhead carpark; there is no bus service along this section of highway.
Register the walk before entering. Rock-climbing groups must request separate group-registration access. Check park alerts, including any temporary hut or fire restrictions.
This remote alpine approach has steep rock, mud and rapidly changing weather. Carry a tent and equipment for unplanned delays; do not attempt the summit in poor weather.
