Access, closures, permits & safety
Start from the signed trackhead car park on the Lyell Highway, 29 km west of Derwent Bridge. Reaching Frenchmans Cap involves a remote 54 km return Grade 4 approach normally completed over 3–5 days, with rough and very steep terrain and limited directional signage.
Use the official Frenchmans Cap trackhead car park on the Lyell Highway, 29 km west of Derwent Bridge. Leave trip details and vehicle information with a reliable contact before departing on the multi-day approach.
A valid Tasmania parks pass and advance walk registration are required. Tahune Hut remains open, but as of 16 July 2026 it has no heating or lighting until further notice; plan to be fully self-sufficient and check current alerts before departure.
Expect almost 1,500 m of accumulated elevation gain, mud, rapidly changing cold, wet and windy weather, and rock scrambling near the summit. This remote route is for experienced, well-equipped and self-sufficient parties; carry navigation and emergency equipment.
Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.
