Fortescue Bay and Cape Hauy Climbing Area

From Eaglehawk Neck, follow the A9 toward Port Arthur, turn onto C344 and continue 12 km on the unsealed but 2WD-suitable road to Fortescue Bay. Cape Hauy is reached from Fortescue Bay by a 9.4 km return Grade 3 track with steep stone steps.

Use the established Fortescue Bay visitor or campground parking before approaching Cape Hauy. The access road carries towing vehicles, delivery trucks and tour buses, so keep left and take particular care on blind corners.

A valid Tasmania parks pass is required. The Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen visitor site and the Waterfall Bay Track entrance from Devils Kitchen are closed from 15 April to 18 September 2026; Waterfall Bay Road remains the alternative access for that track.

Cape Hauy has many steep steps, unprotected track edges, exposed sea cliffs and nearby unpatrolled beaches. Allow about four hours for the return approach, supervise children, check weather and ocean conditions, and carry adequate water and emergency equipment.
