Essential crag checks

Access, closures, permits & safety

Access

Drive south from Flagstaff on Lake Mary Road and use the newer Pit and Sandys Canyon trailhead, west of the former Canyon Vista parking approach. Continue on the climbing approach from this trailhead.

Parking

Park at Sandys Canyon trailhead. Mountain Project explicitly advises against using Canyon Vista Campground as climbing parking.

Closures

Nesting-bird restrictions can close individual Pit walls in spring and summer. The linked NAZCC bulletin is labelled 2025 and is retained as historical context, not a 2026 opening guarantee; follow current Forest Service signs and the newest NAZCC notices.

Permits & access rules

About this crag

Its short, pocketed routes are spread across named walls and towers. Northern Arizona Climbers Coalition works with the Forest Service on nesting-bird closures affecting individual sectors, so select a wall only after checking current notices.

Recommended equipment

Bring equipment appropriate to the climbing style and local conditions. A helmet is strongly recommended.
