Essential crag checks

Access, closures, permits & safety

Access

From Coon Bluff Recreation Area, walk toward where the bluff meets the river, pass through the gate and follow the river downstream toward the north-facing wall. The riverbank approach includes uneven paths and ledges beside the water.

Parking

Use the Coon Bluff Recreation Area parking. Mountain Project states that a Tonto vehicle pass is required; confirm the current pass and posted restrictions before leaving the car.

Permits & access rules

Safety

Helmets are essential for both climber and belayer because rock and holds can break. Watch for rattlesnakes around brush and boulders and assess the river-side ledges before continuing.

Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.

About this crag

The north-facing routes overlook the water, while other lines occupy the eastern bluff. The volcanic rock can remain friable despite cleaning; this is not a place to assume every hold or ledge is solid.

Recommended equipment

Bring equipment appropriate to the climbing style and local conditions. A helmet is strongly recommended.
