Essential crag checks

Access, closures, permits & safety

Access

Reach the slab from Old Highway 40/Donner Pass Road. A signed or posted road closure may require using the Norden/Soda Springs approach rather than coming up from Donner Lake; confirm access before driving.

Parking

The specialist guide identifies shoulder parking below the slab and a bridge parking area about a quarter-mile downhill. Follow present parking signs; the local guide's meeting location can vary by booking.

Permits & access rules

Safety

The usual descent is west into a gully from the top; bring suitable footwear and plan the descent before leaving the ground. Do not interpret the slab's easy grades as a recommendation to solo.

Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.

About this crag

The specialist guide describes traditional protection and a walk-off via the west-side gully; low-angle terrain does not remove the need to assess protection and descent. A current local guiding service still uses School Rock parking as a meeting point and warns of occasional Donner Pass Road closures.

Recommended equipment

Bring equipment appropriate to the climbing style and local conditions. A helmet is strongly recommended.
