Essential crag checks

Access, closures, permits & safety

Access

For Sandia Crest access from Albuquerque, take I 40 east to Tijeras, head north on NM 14, then turn onto NM 536 and continue past the ski area to the crest. Some climbs instead require a foothill approach.

Parking

Parking capacity, fees and road access can change. Confirm current conditions before departure.

Permits & access rules

Safety

Approaches can be strenuous and difficult to locate. Carry navigation, a headlamp and warm waterproof layers. Summer thunderstorms and rapid temperature changes are hazards, and granite is slippery when wet.

Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.
