Essential crag checks

Access, closures, permits & safety

Access

Use the Chapel Pond Pass map to identify the established approach to Upper Beer Wall; different cliffs start from different Route 73 trailheads. Follow marked trails and avoid creating a new shortcut.

Parking

NYSDEC identifies the Chapel Pond Parking Area on Route 73, 6.2 miles north of I-87 Exit 30. Use a legal designated lot for the selected trail and do not park on a prohibited road shoulder.

Permits & access rules

NYSDEC reported all Adirondack climbing routes open as of August 1, 2026, including the Chapel Pond area. Check the current route-closure page and local signs before climbing because nesting restrictions may return.

Safety

DEC advises checking weather and conditions before entering the backcountry. Bring appropriate protection, a descent plan and a partner; wet or icy slabs require extra care.

Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.
