Access, closures, permits & safety
Start from the Lumpy Ridge trailhead and follow the established park trail network. Use the linked formation guide and NPS map for the final approach to Thunder Buttress; do not cross closed access routes.
Use the Lumpy Ridge trailhead lot. From May 22 through October 12, 2026, a timed-entry reservation is required for arrivals from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; display the confirmation in the vehicle and carry a park pass.
The National Park Service says 2026 raptor closures have been lifted. Seasonal nesting closures can return, so review the current NPS closure notice and onsite signs before using the formation or its access trail.
No day-use climbing permit is required. NPS warns that weather, lightning and rockfall can change conditions quickly; check the forecast, gear and descent plan.
Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.
