About this crag
Smith Rock State Park is a major sport-climbing destination with extensive bolted routes, traditional climbing and long canyon views. Routes are spread across multiple formations reached by descending from the day-use rim.
Getting there
Most climbing approaches begin at the day-use parking area, descend into the Crooked River canyon and cross the footbridge. Return climbs can be steep and hot, so allow time and water for the ascent back to the rim.
Parking
A day-use parking permit is required for vehicles and is purchased for the current posted rate. Use marked spaces and overflow instructions; roadside parking outside designated areas may be restricted.
Public transport
There is no regular public transit to the park's climbing access. Most visitors arrive by private vehicle, bicycle or arranged transport.
Before you visit
Some climbing areas and routes are seasonally closed or restricted, commonly from mid-January into summer, to protect nesting golden eagles and falcons. Check the current park advisory and posted signs. The canyon can be very hot, and loose rock is possible.
Recommended equipment
Bring a helmet, sun protection, water, approach footwear and a route-appropriate sport or traditional rack. Verify rope length, descent and current route closure before leaving the ground.
