Essential crag checks
Access, closures, permits & safety
Climbing areas are spread across the park and are reached from park roads, pullouts and short-to-moderate desert approaches. Download maps before entering because mobile service can be unreliable, and use only established roads and trails.
Use signed parking areas and pullouts without driving onto desert vegetation. Lots at popular formations can fill early on weekends and holidays. Entrance, road and trailhead closures can temporarily change the normal approach.
access_notice_requires_review
Check the current NPS climbing-closure page before every visit. Permanent cultural-resource closures and seasonal raptor closures apply to named formations. Summer heat is extreme, water is limited, and annual fire restrictions or trail closures may affect access.
Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.

About this crag
Joshua Tree National Park has thousands of traditional routes and boulder problems on rough monzogranite. The National Park Service describes crack, slab and steep face climbing for a wide range of abilities. Fixed anchors are not maintained by the park.
Public transport
There is no practical public transit between the park's dispersed climbing formations. Most visits require a vehicle or a permitted guide service.
Recommended equipment
Bring a helmet, sufficient water, sun protection, navigation, approach footwear and the equipment required for the chosen discipline. Traditional routes commonly require a climber-supplied rack; route hardware is not inspected by the park.
