Access, closures, permits & safety
Use the public Mount Woodson trail network from the Highway 67 side and the climbing guide to locate Elsa's Boulder; the final boulder approach may be different from the summit trail. Stay out of protected vegetation and respect posted property boundaries.
San Diego County operates the Mount Woodson Gateway parking area at 16286 Highway 67. It is open sunrise to sunset, charges a $5 day-use parking fee, and provides access to the trailhead from Parking Area A.
The county says the gateway preserve itself has no formal trails; it connects to the wider Mount Woodson trail system managed by several jurisdictions. Climbing access to a particular boulder is not guaranteed by a parking ticket. Follow local signs and do not enter closed or private land.
The specialist guide describes short granite climbing and warns that poor route-finding can cause damaging bushwhacking. Check the exact sector, landing and protection before climbing; bring water and avoid stepping through chaparral habitat.
Closures and permit rules can change without notice. Recheck the official land manager before departure.
